Chargers Outlast Vikings in Close Contest

Molly Popkin
In a high-scoring, emotional game yesterday, the CHCH Girls LAX team grabbed their first lead of the game at 2-1 and never relinquished it. With minutes left, the Chargers led 19-13, but Landmark wasn't ready to give up, and scored three quick goals, cutting the Chargers' lead to three. CHCH grabbed one back and then played calmly and with composure to control the ball in the offensive third for the last 1.5 minutes; the game ended CHCH 20-16 Landmark. Playing their second game in two days in cold, damp weather and having only 10 minutes to warm-up, the Chargers pulled together to energize and motivate each other, and they played well from the opening whistle. Yesterday was a day when the team really needed its seniors to step up, and they answered that challenge, with one senior marshaling her defense and standing strong against Landmark's top attack players, and three others orchestrating the transition and driving the offense. The game wasn't all about the seniors, of course, with players from every grade playing important roles and coming through when the team needed them, but the seniors stood out yesterday as the kind of leaders on the field that coaches expect their seniors to be. CHCH vs. Landmark--in any sport--promises to be an exciting, hard-fought competition, and yesterday was no exception!
